The Lucifer (2007) ~ Inside the Mind of a Dark Genius

-

“The Lucifer” (aka “The Devil”) is a 2007 Korean drama, 20 episodes, categorized as Legal drama, Police Procedural, Thriller, Suspense, Revenge, Action, Legal Drama, Police Procedural, Crime, Mystery, Romance, and Fantasy. Streaming on KOCOWA+.

SUMMARY: The lives of a detective, a psychic librarian, and a mysterious lawyer collide in a series of tarot card-linked murders.

She is Psychometric

In “The Lucifer”, Seo Hae-In is psychometric. Yeah. She’s got the “touch”. She doesn’t brag about it and only uses it when necessary. Like when she helped a police detective solve a seemingly unsolvable murder mystery. She tries to avoid touching things and people and is careful about letting people touch her. When you’re psychometric, you can analyze a person or an object by touching them. (See NOTE.)

Seo Hae-In also draws lovely and unique art on tarot cards.  The art on her cards is one-of-a-kind. So when a tarot card is delivered directly to police detective Kang Oh-Soo, and it also shows up at a crime scene, law enforcement requested her assistance. The first card was “Judgment”.

Later, the “Justice” card was delivered to Kang Oh-Soo. Seo Hae-In thought that maybe the person delivering the cards believed that Kang Oh-Soo knew the details of crimes that had been committed. The cards indicate that these crimes must be revealed. Kang Oh-Soo is puzzled. What crimes does he know about? When did they happen? Who is this person sending him tarot cards?

The drama follows three central characters whose lives collide in a chilling chain of murders tied to a tragic event from their youth.

Then and NOW

At the age of 17, Kang Oh-Soo stabbed a fellow student during an argument, resulting in the boy’s death. Although legally acquitted, as an adult, he chose to become a detective and has spent his adult life trying to atone for that one violent mistake. He is assigned to the violent crimes division. He is thrown into a disturbing murder case when a tarot card marked “Judgment” is delivered to him at work. The killer seems to be orchestrating a symbolic reckoning of events Kang Oh-Soo desperately wants to forget.

To solve the case, Kang Oh-Soo seeks help from Seo Hae-In, a gentle librarian with psychometric abilities. Seo Hae-In can read the emotional history of objects through touch. Her visions reveal that the murder victims share a hidden connection.

Oh Seung-Ha is a brilliant, soft-spoken defense attorney who does pro bono legal work. However, his altruistic exterior masks a far darker truth. Oh Seung-Ha represents suspects linked to the murders Kang Oh-Soo is investigating. There is something about the lawyer’s presence that unsettles Kang Oh-Soo from the start.

As Seo Hae-In becomes more involved, she finds herself emotionally entangled with both Kang Oh-Soo and Oh Seung-Hae, creating a quiet but powerful love triangle.

Someone” continues to manipulate events with chilling precision, using tarot cards as both clues and warnings. Murders continue, and the body count rises. Seo Hae-In’s psychic visions begin to reveal painful truths. The final episodes of “The Lucifer” deliver a tragic crescendo.

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is 8.9 out of 10 stars.

While patiently waiting for new releases of Korean dramas to reach the American audience, I continue combing through old Korean dramas and finding lots of hidden gems. It’s the best treasure hunt ever!

It’s interesting to see how K-dramas have evolved over the years. Also, it’s fun to watch the earlier works of some of my favorite actors and actresses.

For example, the Korean actress Shin Min-A is on my faves list. Her acting career began in 2001, and she has played versatile roles across genres ~ seamlessly shifting between romantic comedies, action, fantasy, historical period, and thriller. The first time I saw her was in “Arang and the Magistrate”.  Her career spans more than two decades, and a few of her K-dramas are still on my watch list. In current celebrity news: She married fellow actor Kim Woo Bin in 2025. Fans (and that includes me) are very happy for both of them.
