The Looney Tunes Show Headed To Tubi

AS one taketh away, another giveth. You may have heard Max just voluntarily flushed its entire classic Looney Tunes library down the toilet. Reportedly forsaking the studio’s rich history is part of a new strategy focusing on “adult and family content”…in other words, Max hasn’t had much luck with material that traditonally attracts children, so they’re giving up entirely. It’s extra-irritating because more people than just kids want to watch Looney Tunes.

Our best hope at this point is that third parties take up the slack. The free ad-supported streamer Tubi is doing just that, announcing this week they’ve picked up all episodes of The Looney Tunes Show for debut later this spring. This was a witty series that ran on Cartoon Network from 2011 to 2013 and switched up the formula, transplanting the Looney Tunes cast to a sitcom setting.

It featured the voices of Jeff Bergman, Bob Bergen, Maurice LaMarche, Jim Cummings, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, Billy West, Grey DeLisle and Eric Bauza. We get that this isn’t the original shorts, but it’s not a bad offering either and it could open the door for the shorts to return to streaming somewhere.

On the same day, Tubi will also be picking up the Scooby Doo movies Scooby-Doo! And the Spooky Scarecrow (2013), Scooby-Doo! Ghastly Goals! (2014) and Scooby-Doo! Mecha Mutt Menace (2013), as well as all five seasons of The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries (1995-2002). The thing is, Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries is one of the few WB library titles that’s still on Max. For how long though?

The Looney Tunes Show will premiere on Tubi April 1.

I actually think this is great! The Looney Tunes Show was funny, and it gave these classic characters a modern twist. My kids enjoyed it when they were younger, and I think a new generation will appreciate it too. While I do hope the original shorts return somewhere, this is at least a way to keep Looney Tunes in people’s minds. Plus, it’s free on Tubi, which makes it more accessible!

Honestly, I understand why Max is doing this. If they’re struggling to make kids' content work, it makes sense for them to focus elsewhere. That doesn’t mean I agree with it, but streaming services are businesses first. Tubi picking up The Looney Tunes Show is at least something, and I wouldn’t be surprised if another platform grabs the original shorts eventually.

Oh great, another questionable decision from Warner Bros. How do you mismanage a brand as timeless as Looney Tunes? The Looney Tunes Show was entertaining, but it wasn’t what made these characters iconic. I guess I should be thankful that Tubi is offering something, but this still feels like a downgrade.

I grew up watching classic Looney Tunes, and it’s frustrating to see Max throw away such an important part of animation history. At least Tubi is stepping up, but The Looney Tunes Show is not a full replacement for the original shorts. That said, I did enjoy this series when it aired. It had some clever writing, and I liked the idea of Bugs and Daffy as roommates. Hopefully, enough people watch it on Tubi, so WB sees that Looney Tunes still has an audience. Maybe then they’ll reconsider their decision and bring the classics back.
