The Logan Trailer: Wolverine Hurt Himself Today

20th Century Fox put out its first trailer today for Logan, what we’re interpreting to be Hugh Jackman‘s final appearance as Wolverine. He hasn’t come out and said it, but where does one go from here?

Currently in the X-Men comics, the original Wolverine has been replaced with an older version from another dimension: “Old Man Logan.” Old Man Logan is bitter, angrier, and more prone to slashing first and asking questions later. The Logan seen here isn’t exactly the same character, but it’s the same concept. Logan takes place in a desolate future where all mutants have been hunted down except for two: Wolverine and Professor X (who looks even older than him). In the movie, Logan learns of a third living mutant: X-23, a young female cloned from his DNA.

Forget everything you know about a style-over-substance Fox X-Men flick, because this looks like a promising change of pace. There are no buildings being destroyed, no giant tidal waves, no CGI-heavy demonstrations of mutant powers. It’s just Logan. It feels very different. The use of the Johnny Cash cover of “Hurt” is perhaps on the nose, but it works.

Logan is coming for you March 3 in theaters everywhere.
