The Clone Cops Are Coming January 31

Whatcha gonna do when the Clone Cops come for you? Freestyle Digital Media has announced they are distributing a new dystopian comedy across VOD platforms at the end of this month, as well as limited theatrical screenings.

In the future, the Nefaricorp conglomerate “dominates human existence through high tech, great deals, and free delivery.” How do they do it? Through clones! Their Replicants (hope that’s not a copyrighted term) perform any task they’ve been bred for, which brings us to the day they introduced Clone Cops: soulless soldiers who were programmed to do one thing — kill, and that’s pretty much it. Now a whole army of them have discovered the hideout of a gang of outlaws, who must defend their territory any way possible.

According to the synopsis, the outlaws battle wave after wave of Clone Cops “until they discover a shocking secret about who they are and what they’re up against.” Hmm, given that all these Clone Cops are wearing masks, we bet it has something to do with who they really look like, and who the original might be.

“We made this movie for people who love campy sci-fi comedies, and we’ve been having a blast showing it to them at festivals and theaters across the country,” says director Danny Dones. “Now, we can finally bring this weird little indie flick to people’s living rooms! I want to thank our incredible cast and crew for everything they’ve contributed, and the continuing support they’ve shown for Clone Cops as we’ve worked to bring it to screens large and small. Making this movie was so much fun, and now we get to share that experience with audiences everywhere!”

Clone Cops stars Phillip Cordell, Ravi Patel, Quinnlan Ashe, Steve Byrne, Ted Welch, Allison Shrum, Laura Holloway, Schyler Tillet, Dean Shortland, Henry Haggard, Rashad Rayford, Justin Tarrents, and Victoria Keum Jee. It opens theatrically in select markets Friday, January 31, including Los Angeles, New York City and Nashville, for weeklong runs. It’ll also be available on VOD and Digital HD that day as well, including Apple TV, Prime Video and Fandango at Home.

The mix of dystopia, clones, and comedy makes this an interesting proposition. It’s always a gamble with films like this—sometimes they’re brilliant, and other times they miss the mark entirely. I like that the director is hyped about sharing it with a broader audience; that kind of energy often reflects well on the final product. I’m going in with moderate expectations but plenty of curiosity!

It feels like I’ve seen similar ideas before in bigger-budget films, and I’m worried this might not offer much that’s new. Still, I respect the effort it takes to make an indie movie like this. Maybe I’ll give it a chance if the reviews are decent, but I won’t go out of my way for it.
