20th Century Studios put out a teaser trailer for Alien Romulus, the next Xenomorph-centric picture, early this morning. The release date is five months from now and the studio hasn’t revealed much about it. We don’t even know why it’s called Romulus yet….we assume that’s the name of the spaceship, but we could be surprised.
But from the impression the trailer gives, there doesn’t seem to be much we NEED to know. From all appearances this is a back-to-basics Alien picture: no elaborate backstory, no political theater, no Space Marines, just a simple fight for survival. The plot description is just one sentence: “While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” It does hold a couple surprises though: since when can the Facehuggers break through glass? I recall them having trouble with it in Aliens.
It was stated in an interview that Romulus is meant to take place between Alien and Aliens. Make your guesses as to how the Xenos got on this ship and infested it. However it happened, Ripley can’t help as she’s currently frozen. Not even she can hear you scream.
Alien Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Don’t count on most of their characters to make it to the end credits. The film was directed by Fede Alvarez. The hunt begins again August 16, 2024.
