The Dark Souls franchise is still seen as niche by many gamers but the series has grown out of its cult status from Demon’s Souls into a series that attracts millions of fans. The uncompromising difficulty, huge open worlds and unique mechanics have proven to be a hit with role-playing players and Famitsu has now revealed that the sales of the two Dark Souls games across all platforms has reached an impressive 8 million copies worldwide.
Bandai Namco has revealed that the final installment in the Crown of the Kings DLC trilogy has been delayed. The new add-on was originally due to launch September 24 but has since been pushed back a week to September 30. The publisher didn’t explain the delay in any detail, so it may just be a case of allowing the development team to add last minute polish.
Gaming has always had its benchmark titles; those games that stand out head and shoulders above the rest, those that set the trends other studios work towards or try to best. These seminal titles are considered to be the benchmarks of which other games, and sequels, are judged; particularly within specific genres. Every so often, with increasing rarity in an industry which relies heavily on sequels and franchises, a game comes along and sets a new benchmark.
During the pre E3 conference, gamers saw the much rumoured and speculated Project Beast announced as Bloodborne. Developed by From Software, the Japanese team behind the Souls games, Bloodborne is a new RPG that looks like it will follow in the morbidly dark and terrifying style of the Souls games and Bloodborne will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive and will launch in 2015.
Early in the year it was announced that Demon’s Souls servers would be shutting down at the end of May. Atlus has just confirmed that the servers will continue to stay live for North America.
Developed by FROM Software, Armored Core V is the latest entry in this venerable 15 year-old mech combat franchise. How does it hold up against previous titles in the series and the increasingly crowded multiplayer landscape? Pretty damn well, actually.
