Star Wars Battlefront Has Sold 13 Million Copies
Despite some disappointing reviews, it appears that Star Wars Battlefront has become an overall strong seller for Electronic Arts. Speaking to Fortune, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter expressed his belief that the reboot of the Battlefront franchise has sold between 12-13 million copies worldwide. Another analyst estimated the game sold as many as 13 million copies.
Pachter’s analysis came up with a figure of six million copies of the game sold across the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC platforms in November and another six million copies in December. Going by the average retail price of $55 for the game, based on discounts for the game since launch, Pachter estimated that the game has already generated about $660 million in revenue.
Evan Wilson, an analyst for Pacific Crest Securities, came up with a figure of 13 million units sold for Star Wars Battlefront thus far. Wilson’s figure apparently was calculated before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is currently in theaters.
If the figures are accurate, this is about the number EA had predicted would ship by March 31, 2016. This means the game could be exceeding EA and DICE’s initial expectations. The numbers are likely encouraging for EA after GameStop revealed last November that Star Wars Battlefront did not meet initial sales expectations shortly after launch.
The Force Awakens factor is another interesting characteristic to look at. While many probably expected the film to be popular, its current popularity and box office numbers are staggering. One would imagine the film’s release could help bolster future sales of Star Wars Battlefront as well. In addition, this bodes very well for EA’s future with the Star Wars brand, as the publisher has multiple game projects based on the franchise planned and in development.
EA has not yet revealed official sales numbers for Star Wars Battlefront. Those details will probably not be revealed until EA’s next earnings briefings later in the year.
