Star Trek Enters Strange New Worlds On CBS All Access
Star Trek has proven to be a profitable niche for CBS All Access. Whatever your opinion might be on the quality of the shows they’ve produced so far, there’s no denying the franchise has needed a new home for a long time, and thanks to streaming it has an owner willing to help it nurture and grow again.
So far CBS All Access has produced two Trek shows — Discovery and Picard. Both have new seasons under production, and two more Treks no one has seen yet are in the wings: an untitled series starring Michelle Yeoh, and an animated satiricial series called “Lower Decks.” Now you can add an unprecedented FIFTH simultaneous Star Trek series to the pile: CBS announced Strange New Worlds this week.
The show is a spinoff of Star Trek Discovery and focuses on three of its characters: Anson Mount’s Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn’s Number One and Ethan Peck’s Spock, shortly before Captain Kirk joins the Enterprise. Our biggest question: will Discovery be eventually cancelled for this, or will the actors have to work double-time?
“When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it,” says Alex Kurtzman, the man behind pretty much all things Trek for CBS All Access. “These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories have yet to be told. With Akiva and Henry at the helm, the Enterprise, its crew and its fans are in for an extraordinary journey to new frontiers in the Star Trek universe.”
The pilot script for Strange New Worlds is being written now by Akiva Goldsman, from a story conjured by Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. We don’t know everyone who’s starring, but there will sure be a lot of executive producers: Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth are listed, as well as co-execs Aaron Baiers, Akela Cooper and Davy Perez.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has no release window as of yet.

I’m not too sure about this new Star Trek series. We don’t need a new prequel series. We need to go further into the future.

I’m kind of burned out on new Star Trek shows, but I do like some of the actors in this one. So, we’ll see.
