Stanley Lieber, one of just three men who could claim to have singlehandedly defined the Silver Age of comic books, would be 100 years old if he was still alive today. And he almost made it!
Stan Lee left this mortal plane in 2018, shortly before his 96th birthday and shortly after the loss of his wife. It’s said that couples who live decades together grow so close that they’ll eventually die together, and I don’t know if that’s true, but Mr. Lee provides some evidence (albeit circumstantial). Along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he was involved in the creation of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Black Panther, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, Thor, Silver Surfer, Ant-Man, Nick Fury, The Avengers, and just about everything else that makes Marvel Marvel.
Modern-day Disney obviously owes billions to this guy and they announced plans to honor his memory today. A new documentary, simply titled Stan Lee, is in production for a 2023 release on Disney+. It was announced today with this short trailer:
100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creating. 100 years of Stan Lee.

As the trailer emphasizes, Stan Lee was also known for his Hollywood cameos, which he would simply do on request (he appears in Teen Titans Go To The Movies, where he quickly realizes it’s a DC movie and leaves). He made one appearance in every Marvel film up until, fittingly, Avengers: Endgame.
Happy centennial, Stan the Man! Excelsior, True Believers, ‘Nuff Said and all that.
