We at Popgeeks feel very fortunate that Mel Brooks is still with us at 97, AND that he’s still making things. He’s joked in the past about making a sequel called “Spaceballs III: The Search For Spaceballs II” but no serious talk about a follow-up to his Lucasfilm satire has ever happened…until now.
Sounds like Brooks has a deal with MGM and its parent company Amazon to produce Spaceballs 2 (which might not have the previously mentioned title, given how a reference to The Search For Spock may not be so fresh anymore). Josh Gad, who broke out on Broadway with The Book Of Mormon and is best known as the voice of Olaf in Frozen, is also attached to the project. Gad is writing the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Greenbaum has been hired to direct.
The real question is, is Gad actually IN the film? Any casting decisions are unknown at this time. Perhaps he’ll replace John Candy’s role as Barf.
Star Wars, of course, is a very different animal than it was in 1987 when all that existed were the original three films and a few Ewok cartoons. Between the prequel trilogy, the sequel trilogy, The Mandalorian and all the other assorted spinoffs, there’s almost too much to parody here. We hope Gad can sort it out.
Also, we’re aware there was a Spaceballs cartoon about ten years ago that served as a sequel, but it may be the worst thing that has Brooks’ name on it, so…we don’t talk about it. The REAL Spaceballs sequel is now under development.
