Earlier this month Sony revealed their own take on the mini plug-in console craze, but would only confirm five of the 20 planned games to be preloaded inside their Playstation Classic. Everyone had their own notions of what should be in there — the typical list was about 75% RPGs, a couple Spyros and Ape Escape (which we never would have gotten due to its Dualshock requirement). This morning they published their full list, and….is it a letdown? For most people, yes:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

No Tomb Raider, no SOTN, no Crash, just one Final Fantasy…..and Mr. Driller??? Even with the classics they got right, there are mistakes: most Twisted Metal fans consider #2 to be the top game in the series, not #1.

Part of the reason why Nintendo’s Classics line has been such a massive hit is because they got the list correct. In the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, there isn’t a dud in the bunch — it’s the kind of list a fan would make. Sony list, however, feels random and more than a little uneducated. NO ONE PLAYED the original Grand Theft Auto — that series didn’t become popular until the PS2!

Of course, if the miniconsole turns out to be hackable, it won’t truly matter what the shelf lineup is — but then again, you still get no thumbsticks. We can’t say we recommend the Playstation Classic this Christmas.
