Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD arrives in just two weeks, and Sega confirmed a little surprise today to spike pre-release interest: Sonic the Hedgehog is an unlockable character in the game.

This wasn’t the case in the original Banana Blitz, which came out on the Nintendo Wii and used motion controls. This one thankfully does NOT use motion controls, but retains all 100 levels, ten multiplayer minigames and all the boss battles. And now, Sonic!

He looks great, especially since they elected to go with his classic design. Bulbous belly, big shoes and all, he blazes through the stages in this video, where all the bananas have been changed to rings:

It’ll be interesting to see how the Hog handles on some of these stages. We would bet his speed would make some of the more confined, twisty stages harder to play. The video exclusively shows straight tracks that someone like Sonic would have little problem with.

And there’s more: Sonic isn’t the only unlockable. You can also get a selection of alternate costumes for each base monkey if you play well enough.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD revitalizes this classic title with updated graphics (480p > 1080p at 60fps) and optimized controls for each platform. Motion controls from the original Banana Blitz have been removed in favor of tightened analog controls, making it a breeze to jump in and start rolling through the game’s 100 levels.
Sonic the Hedgehog is available as a hidden, unlockable character in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD. Playing as the world’s fastest hedgehog comes with some unique effects. In addition to boasting incredible speed (obviously), selecting Sonic automatically changes all stages’ bananas to golden rings, complete with nostalgic, classic SFX!
Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD will roll onto Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch and XBox One October 29. A PC version is on the way later this year.
