Rogue One Reaches Over $300 Million
It was another good Christmas for that time long ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Box Office Mojo has Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a new prequel to the 1977 original, reaching over $64 million for the holiday weekend. It easily topped the box office against all the competition for the holiday season. Plus, it earned $96 million for the four-day weekend. This brings Rogue One’s total domestic take to $318 million worldwide.
As of now, it looks like Rogue One’s box office will continue to climb. It’s a good bet the film will make over $500 million domestic. Additionally, it’s already made $573 million worldwide. Obviously, it won’t top The Force Awakens, but it should be interesting to see where it stops.
Meanwhile, the Assassin’s Creed movie was a complete and utter bomb. The video game Rogue One was in the top slot, but Assassin’s Creed, which had a reported budget of about $200 million, only opened with $10 million. Hollywood had two big video game movies again this year in Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft, but they both flopped. The only successful one was Angry Birds, which didn’t get great reviews, but it did made over $107 million in the US.
The next Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode VIII, opens in theaters on December 15, 2017.
