We now know precisely when we’ll be playing Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and a whole lot more. Today Square Enix dumped the biggest load of information yet regarding the game, which is now confirmed to be out for all consoles April 8, 2027. A new trailer was revealed during Sony’s State of Play, but that wasn’t all…ten minutes of new gameplay footage has also been released, and you can find both below.
One new addition everyone expected: the Highwind will allow your party to travel anywhere in the open world once you get past a certain point. The world map when viewed from the Highwind is smaller, but once you pick a location and parachute in, the full area loads. When you’re not on the Highwind, you can use your trained Chocobo, Pico, to get places quickly and even fly. In terms of new gameplay improvements, it will be possible to switch between characters not just in battle, but everywhere else. POOF: you’re Tifa. Why would you want to do this? Because some specific quests can only be unlocked if you approach them as a specific character.
Remember FFX-2 where dressing your character up in a different outfit would give them different abilities? It’s back. The clothes you put on each character will alter their skills to one of four class systems: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner. Do you prefer this or skill trees?
And when it’s over….it’s NOT over. Square announced two bonus DLC chapters are in the works, “Story DLC 1: Sephiroth” and “Story DLC 2: Vincent & the Turks.” They will be released in the winter of 2027 and spring of 2028. And after that…Square will either have to come up with some original ideas or start remaking FF9.
So how is the release itself looking? If you know anything about games these days you know there will be several different releases at varied prices. The biggest question has been if we’re getting a physical version of FF7 Revelation in any form. The answer from Square is….they’ll meet you halfway on that. Here’s what on Earth that means….
On PS5 and XBox, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will ship on one disc. The previous two games came on two, one holding data that needed to be transferred to the HDD before playing. They’re not doing that this time; to save a few cents on plastic they’re making it a download, and thereby making internet access a requirement. Hence, it’s a half-physical release. Except in the case of Switch 2 where it’s a barely physical release (Square has never put a game out for Switch 2 that is not a key card).
The Standard Edition of the game with no frills will cost an expected $69.99, though you may be able to get some kind of extraneous physical item with it depending on where you preorder. The physical Deluxe Edition for $99.99 will include a mini-soundtrack, artbook and Steelbook case. The Premium Edition, which is digital for the same price, has the electronic versions of the soundtrack and artbook, grants access to the game 24 hours early, and adds the Expansion Pass that covers the cost of the DLCs when they’re out. It’s worth thinking about since buying those DLCs separately will likely cost more.
And there’s more than that: a Premium Plus Edition includes everything in the Premium Edition plus a handful of in-game items that probably don’t mean much for $109.99. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Series Trilogy Edition is for newcomers and for $84.99, you get Remake and Rebirth immediately upon preordering.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released April 8, 2027 on Switch 2, Playstation 5, XBox Series X and PC.
