Japan House, a Southern Californian museum that displays works from contemporary Japanese artists, is now showing off a line of works with a specific theme. It’s POKEMON X KOGEI, a collaboration between The Pokemon Company and the Japanese art community that resulted in over 70 works created by 20 renowned artists. It’s now available to stare at in the US.
The exhibition’s offerings range from pieces from seasoned metal artists like Morihito Katsura to young artists just starting out like sculptor Taiichiro Yoshida. Many of them are pretty wild. “Pikachu Forest,” for example, is a piece by textile designer Reiko Sudo that is made up of over 900 strands of lace suspended from the ceiling, each containing the shape of a Pikachu somewhere in it. Then there’s “Jolteon,” a rendition of the legendary electric-type assembled from hundreds of individual pieces of gold- and silver-plated copper, each hammered into the shape of lightning bolts. This stuff took a while.
“This unique collaboration answer the question, ‘What happens when Pokémon meets kogei?’ for art enthusiasts and gamers alike,” said Yuko Kaifu, president of Japan House Los Angeles. “We’re excited to present this unique collaboration with exceptional artists and artworks showcasing the rich world of Japanese craft through the global phenomenon of Pokémon appreciated by all ages around the world.”
The exhibit originally opened earlier this year at National Crafts Museum, and will be in America until January 7. While that’s a long time, there are no plans to show the exhibit anywhere else besides Japan House.
