Pixar’s Elemental Comes To Home Video Formats Soon

Believe it or not, Pixar’s Elemental can now be considered somewhat of a success for the company. It’s proven to have a long tail, remaining in the top ten box office to this very day despite opening soft. The bad marketing made the movie look very generic, but positive word of mouth has overtaken the badly edited ads and given the film a second chance. It’s now earned over $400 million, twice as much as Encanto.

This hasn’t changed plans to get Elemental out for digital ownership later this month, or its disc release in September. Those are still on track, and here’s what you get:

Bonus Features*

Short Film

  • Carl’s Date – Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® Award winner Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins, this all-new short, “Carl’s Date,” finds Carl reluctantly agreeing to go on a date with a lady friend, but admittedly with no idea how dating works these days. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends, if you’re a dog. “Carl’s Date” opened in theaters in front of Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental.”

Featurettes

  • Ember and Wade – Take a deeper look at the development of main characters Ember and Wade, from early designs to final effects, and learn how the complex work of the technical and character teams brought these characters to life.
  • Next Stop: Element City – Explore how Element City is built to accommodate its different inhabitants. Director Peter Sohn and crew members share insights about the evolution of the designed world, as well as some of the research that inspired its unique look.
  • Paths to Pixar: The Immigrant Experience – Hear from first-generation filmmakers on the Elemental crew as they share their journeys to Pixar.  Discover how Elemental’s real-world themes of sacrifice and identity, amongst many others, reflect or diverge from their own lived experiences.

Deleted Scenes

Director Peter Sohn introduces five scenes that are storyboarded, set to music, timed, and voiced, but are not included in the final version of Elemental.

  • Intro Ember – An alternate opening in which our hero Ember helps a newly immigrated Fire family navigate through, and acclimate to, Element City. Scene introduced by director Peter Sohn.
  • Mom Rejects Wade – Ember’s traditional parents learn that she’s enamored with watery Wade…and it doesn’t go well. Scene introduced by story supervisor Jason Katz.
  • Dante Challenge – In an attempt to keep Ember apart from Wade, Bernie tasks her with finding a place to live for newcomer Dante, who Wade finds himself rather enamored with. Scene introduced by story artist Nira Liu.
  • Brook Dinner – Ember joins Wade for dinner at his home, in this abandoned storyline in which Wade’s mother, Brook, is revealed to be the villain diverting water into Firetown. Scene introduced by story artist Anna Benedict.
  • Beach Proposal – Sharing a tender moment on the beach, Ember and Wade propose marriage to each other. Scene introduced by story artists Yung-Han Chang and Le Tang.

Audio Commentary

  • Elemental Filmmaker Commentary – Join director Peter Sohn, supe tech Sanjay Bakshi, supervising animator Mike Venturini, and directing animator Gwendelyn Enderoglu as they provide insight into the making of this remarkable animated feature while you watch it.

Elemental takes place in a world where the elements are living beings: fire, water, air and earth co-exist, or at least try to. The movie stars Leah Lewis (Nancy Drew) as Ember, a literally fiery individual who has to find a way to get along with the smooth, cool water type Wade, voiced by Mamoudou Athie.

As for the Disney+ release…nope, no word yet. Elemental comes to digital August 15, and Blu-Ray and DVD September 26.

I'm a big fan of Pixar, so it's disappointing to see Elemental struggle at the box office. However, I think it's important to remember that critical reviews improved after its Cannes debut, and many viewers liked it too. The streaming-heavy approach might have affected its theatrical success, but I hope Disney bounces back with their upcoming movie, Wish. I hope the home video sales will let this movie recover but its chances lessens since Disney will stop making DVDs and Blu Ray for Australia.

I really loved Elemental, and it's sad to see it not do well at the box office. Pixar used to be a guarantee for success, but things have changed. I think one factor is people waiting for movies to be on Disney+ rather than going to theaters. The Cannes premiere didn't help either, but I'm glad the reviews improved afterward. Elemental faced tough competition with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was a popular choice for families. Original movies like Elemental struggle in a franchise-dominated era. Overall, the box office is struggling, and I hope more people give Elemental a chance later on in home video.

Elemental was such a wholesome movie, and I can't believe it didn't do well at the box office. Pixar used to be unbeatable, but times have changed. People now prefer waiting for Disney+ releases, affecting box office numbers. The Cannes premiere didn't go as planned, but it got better reviews later on. The competition was intense, especially with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse being a huge hit. In today's era of franchises, original movies like Elemental face challenges. The overall box office has been struggling due to the pandemic, making it hard for any film to succeed. I hope more people discover Elemental later on.

Most Boring movie I had ever seen! If a movie is good there will be word of mouth.Elemental was such a boring movie, and I'm not surprised it flopped at the box office. Pixar used to be good, but now they're just churning out mediocre films. People are smart for waiting for Disney+ releases; why waste money on something that's not even worth seeing in theaters? The Cannes premiere was a joke, and the later reviews couldn't save this trainwreck. There were so many better movies to watch, like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Original movies like Elemental don't stand a chance in a world of franchises. The pandemic is just an excuse; this movie was doomed from the start with its lackluster marketing.

So this movie is actually a success? I'm over the moon with Pixar's Elemental's success! It's incredible how it's holding its own in the box office charts. The positive word of mouth is well-deserved. I'm marking my calendar for the digital release this August and the disc release in September. The bonus features seem fantastic, particularly the short film "Carl's Date" – I'm sure it'll be adorable! The featurettes about Ember and Wade are a must-watch too. Can't wait!

Doesn't it need to earn 500 million to break even because they will share half of the earnings to theater owners?
