Metaphor: ReFantazio

Persona 3 Remake Confirmed, Alongside New Pseudo-Persona

Yesterday Microsoft held its XBox Showcase where, among many other things, the two Persona trailers that leaked last week made their “official” debuts. To refresh your memory, they are Persona 5 Tactica, a spinoff XCOM-like strategy game, and a remake of Persona 3.

But it’s what was revealed after that which was the most interesting. We remarked when these trailers first hit the Net that there should really be a Persona 6 by now. And we got some answers there: what’s coming next isn’t Persona 6, it’s a completely new game by the same team.

Say hello to METAPHOR: REFANTAZIO.

Sure looks like Persona 6, doesn’t it? Same art style, same cinematics, same types of characters, same dynamic loud menus with huge fonts. But it’s not. We’re going to have to wait a bit to find out why the team decided to make something new instead of the long-demanded sequel, and what exactly makes it different from Persona. All we have to go on at the moment is the above trailer and Atlus‘s description:

Write your destiny and rise above fear as you step into a fantasy world unlike anything you’ve seen before. Fraught with unsettling mystery, the kingdom stands on a precipice. Now, you must embark on a journey, overcoming obstacles and forging bonds with friends.

Metaphor: ReFantazio will arrive on PC and XBox sometime in 2024, as well as PS5 (the trailer doesn’t say that because Microsoft has this rule about not mentioning multiplatform deals for trailers in its conferences).

But back to the Persona 3 remake…there’s something you might need to know. After the trailer was officially unveiled, Atlus admitted the “new” version of the game won’t include everything. The definitive version of the original, Persona 3 FES, contained an extra chapter and a playable female protagonist, neither of which will be in this remake. BUT you can count on them being in Persona 3 Remake FES R Golden in a couple years!

If that deflates your enthusiasm and changes your buying plans, join the club. It’s Atlus…you should know the risks by now.

Persona 3 is getting a remake! I might be living under a rock because I didnt know it is happening. I'm super excited to dive back into that world and experience it all over again. Can't wait to see what improvements they make!

The Persona 3 remake not having the extra chapter and female protagonist is a bummer. I was really looking forward to experiencing that content again with updated graphics and gameplay. It feels like a missed opportunity. I play female when I played the originals years ago since I prefer girl characters.

This new game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, looks pretty intriguing. I mean, it has the same style and vibe as Persona 5, but it's something completely different. I'm curious to find out what makes it stand apart from the Persona series. I love the art style and cinematics of the Persona series, so I'm glad to see that Metaphor: ReFantazio maintains that familiar look. It's like stepping into a fantastical world filled with mystery and adventure. Sign me up!

I'm really curious about the new Tartarus in Persona 3 Reload. The darker ambiance seems to match the game's overall atmosphere. I wonder if there will be more challenging Shadow ambushes with the open floor design.I'm really looking forward to seeing how faithful the remake will be to the original Persona 3. It's great that Atlus is working on modernizing the game. I hope they make Tartarus as interactive as the Palaces in Persona 5.

I hope they incorporate some mechanics from Persona 5 Royal into Persona 3 Reload. The Persona series keeps evolving, and it would be great to see some of the newer features in the remake.

Damn I can't believe they're leaving out the content from Persona 3 Portable and Persona 3 FES in the remake. Those versions had some great additions and improvements. It feels like a missed opportunity to not include them. It's disappointing that they're not including the female protagonist in the remake. She was an important character for many players, and it would have been nice to have the option to play as her again. It feels like a step backward to have no option anymore.

I can understand why they would recast some of the original voice actors, especially considering the recent controversies surrounding one of them. It's important to address such issues and make sure the game reflects a positive and respectful environment.

I'm actually excited about the remake. I never got a chance to play Persona 3 when it first came out, so this is a great opportunity for me to experience it with updated graphics and gameplay. I don't mind the absence of the female protagonist since I never played Persona 3, Persona 4 is my first game.
