Yesterday Microsoft held its XBox Showcase where, among many other things, the two Persona trailers that leaked last week made their “official” debuts. To refresh your memory, they are Persona 5 Tactica, a spinoff XCOM-like strategy game, and a remake of Persona 3.
But it’s what was revealed after that which was the most interesting. We remarked when these trailers first hit the Net that there should really be a Persona 6 by now. And we got some answers there: what’s coming next isn’t Persona 6, it’s a completely new game by the same team.
Say hello to METAPHOR: REFANTAZIO.
Sure looks like Persona 6, doesn’t it? Same art style, same cinematics, same types of characters, same dynamic loud menus with huge fonts. But it’s not. We’re going to have to wait a bit to find out why the team decided to make something new instead of the long-demanded sequel, and what exactly makes it different from Persona. All we have to go on at the moment is the above trailer and Atlus‘s description:
Write your destiny and rise above fear as you step into a fantasy world unlike anything you’ve seen before. Fraught with unsettling mystery, the kingdom stands on a precipice. Now, you must embark on a journey, overcoming obstacles and forging bonds with friends.
Metaphor: ReFantazio will arrive on PC and XBox sometime in 2024, as well as PS5 (the trailer doesn’t say that because Microsoft has this rule about not mentioning multiplatform deals for trailers in its conferences).
But back to the Persona 3 remake…there’s something you might need to know. After the trailer was officially unveiled, Atlus admitted the “new” version of the game won’t include everything. The definitive version of the original, Persona 3 FES, contained an extra chapter and a playable female protagonist, neither of which will be in this remake. BUT you can count on them being in Persona 3 Remake FES R Golden in a couple years!
If that deflates your enthusiasm and changes your buying plans, join the club. It’s Atlus…you should know the risks by now.
