Oculus VR has officially opened pre-orders for the Oculus Rift headset, and the price has turned out to be quite steep for the new VR headset. Per the official website, the site will go for a hefty price tag of $599.00. That’s for the consumer model version, which will include the headset, a sensor, the Oculus Remote, cables, an Xbox One controller, EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale.
While the price tag is quite heavy, pre-ordering the Rift at least nets players free copies of Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie. However, another wrinkle to this is that the shipping date has now been apparently shifted back to June 2016. The official release of the Oculus Rift is supposed to be March 28, but it seems like it won’t actually ship to consumers until much later.
VR and the Oculus have been getting a lot of hype for quite some time. However, this is the year for PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift to yield some hard results. With Oculus Rift setting its price so high, one might question the wisdom of making it such a premium item so early.
The new website is making it easier for players to get their PC’s ready for using the Rift. There’s an easy to download and run Rift compatibility tool for Windows so players can see if their computer is compatible with the headset. Now that the price is out there the Rift, one wonders what Sony Computer Entertainment will do for the PlayStation VR headset. One imagines that Sony will attempt to set the price lower for the VR headset, but that remains to be seen.
