Octopath Traveler Getting Mobile Prequel
If you still haven’t played Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler, get on that. After many false starts and botched attempts, Square has finally, successfully captured the spirit of oldschool 90s RPGs while updating them for a modern generation. It alone is worth the price of a Switch.
But if you don’t have a Switch, or you find stuffing one in your pocket to be rather difficult? Square is working on that…a spinoff of Octopath Traveler is headed to mobile devices. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is its name. It plays in the same manner (albeit with touch and swipe controls) and the story is a prequel to the Switch game.
- HD-2D for smartphones – 3D CG screen effects added to pixelized graphics create a magical world on smartphones.
- Eight-character party command-based battles – Form a party of up to eight characters to fight in evolved command-based battles. Smooth gameplay with swipe controls.
- Choice of story between three reigning champions – The setting is the Orsterra continent. The protagonist is a “Chosen One” who will fight against a great evil that has achieved fortune, power, and fame.
- Field commands – Take various actions towards characters on the field. Try out all sorts of things, such as “Listen” for information, “Steal” an item, “Hire” an ally, and more.
Currently Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is only confirmed for release in Japan, but if you have the means, you can get on the list for an early demo. You may recall an Octopath Traveler demo was offered on the Switch months before the full game’s release. Square is doing the same here. The sign-up window lasts from today, March 12, through Sunday, March 17, but it could end before then as only 1,600 applicants will be accepted (800 on iOS, 800 on Android). Throw your name in by going here (Square Enix Members account required).
If a North American release of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is confirmed, we’ll let you know.
