NYCC 2017: One Thing Will Be Different About Hulu’s Runaways
Though much of the TV adaption of Runaways seems to be the same, there are a few obvious changes, such as the aging-up of Molly as well as the alteration of her race. There is one element of the original comic, however, that was going to be controversial were it placed on television as-is. I’ve been wondering myself about how they would adapt this. Guess we have our answer.
Nico Minoru first gains her magic staff when it absorbs itself into her body. In the comics, she can only bring it out through the shedding of her own blood, which is usually accomplished by cutting herself.
Lyrica Okano, who plays Nico in the new series, said during the NYCC Marvel panel that this will no longer be the case. “That’s one thing that’s been tweaked. Nico does not cut herself. I think for good reason for the show. There’s going to be a lot of young teenagers who are going to be watching the show and we don’t want to promote anything like self-harming because that’s very serious.”
She added this: “There is an element of drawing blood, though, I will say.”
So now to bring out the staff Nico has to perhaps….bite herself? Are we now encouraging our nation’s youth to chomp on their arms? Shame on Marvel…
