No Way Out ~ The Roulette is a 2024 Crime Thriller K-Drama

“No Way Out ~ The Roulette” is a 2024 original Korean crime drama series, with 8 episodes, categorized as Action, Crime, Police Procedural, Thriller and Suspense; currently streaming on Disney+/Hulu.

SUMMARY: In “No Way Out ~ The Roulette”, an unidentified masked person sponsors a deadly game but people are willing to play because the amount you can win is simply irresistible. A criminal who has served his time has been released from prison. But when the roulette wheel was spun, his name came up, and whoever can kill him will win 20 billion won for. Sound like fun?

How Much Money Do You Get If You Cut Off Your Ear?

In “No Way Out ~ The Roulette”, Yoon Chang-Jae had to be admitted to the hospital because someone cut his ear off. Meanwhile, Detective Baek Joong-Sik tries to pursue a lead to catch the person who did it. That person is actually Yoon Chang-Jae’s friend. They were both playing a game of roulette. Nobody knows who started this game. All they know is they can win a lot of money.

The wheel was spun, Yoon Chang-Jae’s name showed up and whoever cut off his ear would get one billion won. Did Yoon Chang-Jae willingly let his friend cut off his ear? Of course not! After a brutal fight, his friend overcame him and cut off his ear. Guess what? His friend got the money. YAY! Uuuhh … ??? … maybe it’s too soon to say YAY.

Detective Baek Joong-Sik finds the address of Yoon Chang-Jae’s friend and goes to his apartment. Nobody is at home so Joong-Sik starts looking around and finds the case full of money! Joong-Sik is experiencing serious financial difficulties at the moment and … that money, which should be “evidence” is very tempting. But before he can do anything, Yoon Chang-Jae’s friend arrives and as soon as he sees Joong-Sik in his apartment, he runs away. Joong-Sik chases after him and in the process, the man falls accidentally and ends up dead.

To be clear, Joong-Sik did not kill him. That was an accident. To be extra clear, once Joong-Sik realized he was dead, he went back to the guy’s apartment and took the money. That is a crime. But hey! Who’s going to know? Yoon Chang-Jae might know! After all, he lost his ear for that money.

When Yoon Chang-Jae regained consciousness he snuck out of the hospital and went to his friend’s apartment. There’s no trace of the money. Detective Baek Joong-Sik might have thought he could get away with stealing the money. But he got caught on camera. Imagine. A desperate cop who forgot that most cars these days have dashcams. Yoon Chang-Jae got his hands on a clear video showing what he did. So Yoon Chang-Jae starts following him, hoping to get the money back!

How Much Money Do You Get If You Kill an Ex-Convict?

Meanwhile, Kim Guk-Ho was sentenced to 15 years for rape and murder. But his time was cut short by 2 years and he was released early for good behavior. A group of policemen including investigators arrive as his “protective detail”. He wants to know why he can’t just walk out of prison. The law enforcement officers tell him it’s because a mob is out there waiting to kill him. He says “But I’ve served my time.”

Yeah. That might be true, but they tell him that even though he probably didn’t sign up to play roulette, there’s a bounty on his head of 20 billion won for any player who kills him! The police must protect him. Baek Joong-Sik is assigned to the team who have to protect him.

Protecting this scumbag was not going to be easy. There were lots of people who wanted that 20 billion won. But there was one person who just wanted him to die! Who is this person? The mother of the victim that he raped and murdered. She came close to killing him but missed. Sadly, a young police officer was badly injured instead.

The unidentified masked man in charge of the game notified the players that he visited the father of the victim and left some money. The father had lost his mind after his daughter died and was unable to take care of himself. Perhaps the money could help pay for his long-term medical care. His wife is dying of liver cancer. Before leaving this world, she wanted to take out her daughter’s killer so that she could go to her grave in peace. Unfortunately, she failed and during her attempt, she harmed an innocent party. The unidentified masked man who is in charge of the game told the players that the money was still available to be won by whoever kills Kim Guk-Ho.  But please avoid hurting innocent people.

Out of the blue, Lee Sang-Bong, an attorney shows up saying that he will provide Kim Guk-Ho with legal counsel. Of course, he has an ulterior motive that has to do with a game of dirty politics and getting rid of a certain politician. Meanwhile, Yoon Chang-Jae is still trying to approach Baek Joong-Sik to get his “ear money”.

That’s just great! An unidentified masked man started a dangerous illegal game of roulette where players win money if they kill an ex-convict combined with a lawyer playing a game of dirty politics combined with a dirty cop trying to get away with the money he stole while being chased by the person he stole the money from. It’s INSANE!

Main Characters:

  • Baek Joong-Sik (played by Cho Jin-Woong, “Believer 1 and 2”)
  • Kim Guk-Ho (played by Yoo Jae-Myung, “Uncle Samsik”)
  • Lee Sang-Bong (played by Kim Moo-Yul)
  • Yoon Chang-Jae (played by Lee Kwang-Soo)

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

  • IMDb: 6.7 out of 10 stars
  • My Drama List: 7.7 out of 10 stars
  • Dramabeans: 7 out of 10 stars
  • CommonSenseMedia: 3 out of 5 stars

My personal rating is the same as My Drama List.

To be honest, that first episode in the beginning scenes with the guy getting his ear cut off … I was like: “Oh no! It’s one of those kind of K-dramas.” Would you play a game where you had to lose a body part to win money? That’s not a friggin’ game! That’s insanity! But that’s how “No Way Out: The Roulette” got started. Then the storyline evolved (or devolved) into even more insanity. This series is similar to “The Killing Vote”.

This whole 'No Way Out' concept seems a bit messed up. People are willing to kill or mutilate each other for money? And there's a lawyer playing dirty politics on top of it all? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. I'm curious about the exploration of desperation and morality, but I might need a break from the violence.

A K-drama with car chases, shootouts, and a deadly game? Sign me up! 'No Way Out' sounds like an adrenaline rush. I love how they mix the action with the psychological thriller elements. That first episode with the ear cutting sounds brutal, but it definitely hooked me in. Cho Jin-Woong is always great, so I'm excited to see him play a conflicted cop.

No Way Out' reminds me a bit of 'The Killing Vote.' I loved the suspense and mind games in that one. But the whole 'ear cutting' scene sounds a little too extreme. I hope the rest of the series focuses on the psychological battle and not just the shocking violence.

"8 episodes? Perfect length for a weekend binge! 'No Way Out' sounds like the kind of K-drama I could devour in a couple of days. Love that it's on Disney+/Hulu, super convenient. Hopefully, the dark elements don't get too overwhelming, but the action and suspense sound promising."

Excited to see a Korean take on the deadly game genre! 'No Way Out' sounds like a wild ride, and I'm curious to see how Korean culture is incorporated into the storyline. The mix of action, suspense, and social commentary is intriguing. Definitely adding this to my international K-drama watchlist

It's wild alright. It reminds me a little bit of β€œThe Escape of the Seven”. That's the Kdrama where I hated most of the characters. The 2 characters in β€œNo Way Out ~ The Roulette” that my heart went out to were the parents of the woman who had been raped and murdered. They were humans. The rest just acted like animals.

Some reviewers claimed the series was light and lacked bite. But to me, it was full of darkness and created enough angst in me to make me want to bite my nails. LOL.
