Nintendo Switch Online Gains Four Genesis Classics
It’s rare that an NSO update hits and no one has anything bad to say about it, but here we are: Nintendo Switch Online updated its Genesis library today with four titles, and they don’t disappoint.
First off, Mega Man: The Wily Wars is among them. This was the Genesis conversion of Mega Man 1, 2 and 3 on the NES, so that’s three excellent games in one (Mega Man has no presence in the NSO NES library due to Capcom wanting to sell those separately). Wily Wars would have moved many a Toys R Us Vidpro ticket in its day, if that had been possible — instead Capcom elected to distribute it exclusively through the Sega Channel, which not many Genesis owners had. In a way, NSO is its own Sega Channel, but physical copies of Wily Wars do exist now.
Second, we’ve got Comix Zone now. This one’s been part of every Genesis compilation from the last twenty years, so its appearance was inevitable. It’s a pretty unique concept for a brawler: a comic book artist is transported into his own book by the supervillain he created. You must battle on the comics pages, creating giant sound effects like “WACK!!!” and swinging through panels to head to the next scene. Succeed, and the hot girl giving you advice will be transported back into the real world with you. Fail, and the supervillain becomes real instead and destroys the world. This is also one of the Genesis’ hardest titles, so you will see the fail screen a LOT MORE than the victory screen.
Third, it’s Zero Wing. It’s a fine shooter, but it’s more well known for creating one of the very first widespread Internet memes due to its embarrassing translation job. And then there’s something called Target: Earth. …We know nothing about that one.
But these should keep you busy until Nintendo gets around to updating one of the other libraries. The four games are live on the NSO expansion now.
