SUMMARY: A soldier’s girlfriend gave him a Dear John Letter via a text message. But he wants her to change her mind. She decide to go see him in person. It could have been normal meeting between a couple that could have either ended in a breakup or a reconciliation. Only, along the way they both ran into zombies.
In “Newtopia”, Lee Jae-yoon is a soldier whose mandatory military enlistment has been repeatedly delayed. Kang Young-joo is a rookie corporate employee struggling to find her footing in the high-pressure world of Seoul’s office culture. They are both young, and Kang Young-joo is beginning to question whether she should “sacrifice” her time and wait for Lee Jae-yoon to return home. He tried to call her, but she didn’t answer her phone, and he became suspicious. She’s not cheating, but she did have too much to drink at an office gathering. Kang Young-joo couldn’t answer the phone because she had passed out. When she did return the call, there was a misunderstanding. But they cleared things up. At least, Lee Jae-yoon thought it was all good. But then Kang Young-joo contacted him and said she wanted to break up.
WHAT? WAIT!! WE CAN WORK IT OUT!! CAN’T WE TALK ABOUT THIS??!!
Lee Jae-yoon is apologizing profusely. He’s willing to take the blame for anything and everything. Just don’t break up with him. PLEASE!
Kang Young-joo is having doubts and questions about whether their love relationship has a future. A male co-worker is showering her with his attention, hoping to persuade her to make the breakup FINAL and give him a chance. Unlike her current boyfriend, he promises her stability, saying he would be like a “strong tree” she could lean on, someone dependable, grounded, and always there for her.
Kang Young-joo wanted to meet with Lee Jae-yoon so they could talk face-to-face and perhaps finalize their breakup. The would-be replacement boyfriend offered to drive her to meet her boyfriend, no doubt hoping he would become the ex-boyfriend. The co-worker would already be there for her, and he could take her home. Only … a horrible thing happened on the way to meet up with Lee Jae-yoon. There was an accident. The head of a zombie broke through the windshield of the co-worker’s car.
Slowly but surely, they realize that zombies are running rampant all over Seoul. The male co-worker’s phony façade quickly crumbles. All he wants to do is survive. If that means abandoning Kang Young-joo to escape zombies … well! … so much for being a strong tree.
Meanwhile, somewhere else in Seoul, Lee Jae-yoon has armed himself with chainsaws, iron pipes, and sheer determination. Though separated from Kang Young-joo at the beginning of the outbreak, he is willing to cut through hordes of zombies to find her. Who’s the real “strong tree”? Of course, his goal is to reunite with Kang Young-joo and convince her that they belong together. But first … they both have to SURVIVE the walking dead.
My personal rating is the same as MDL.
