Most Movie Studios Are Skipping SDCC This Year

It’s almost time for San Diego Comic-Con, so what big news can we expect? Nothing from Disney — they just cancelled all their panels and announcements. Perhaps Universal can fill that gap — no wait, they’re also going to be absent. Netflix just announced they’re skipping too, and so did Sony. For the first time in a long time, SDCC has almost no major movie panels!

The reason is obvious: these panels tend to include special guests in the form of actors, or the writers and showrunners, or both. The latter is currently on strike and the former is scheduled to join them as SAG-AFTRA stands a very realistic chance of joining the picket line with WGA next month. While there are still TV shows and movies in the can and ready to go, no one would be present to talk about them. The panels would just be a screening of the trailer, if that — and that’s a thing you can just throw online.

Despite all this, there ARE studios that still haven’t backed out of SDCC 2023. Warner Bros still wants to show off their upcoming superhero movies (you might have heard they’re not doing so hot) and Amazon Prime has new The Boys footage they want to premiere. Paramount has also not cancelled its TMNT: Mutant Mayhem panel, so there’s that.

If you’re planning to attend SDCC, you’ll still find a lot of nifty booths full of exclusive merch, but don’t expect the panels to be quite as jazzy. This DOES provide SDCC a rare opportunity, if for just one year, to return focus to what it was founded to be about — comic books.

San Diego Comic-Con seems to be facing one obstacle after another. First, the pandemic disrupted the convention, and now the writer's strike is causing major studios to back out. It's definitely been a challenging time for the organizers and fans alike. Let's hope that things settle down soon, and SDCC can regain its full glory in the future. Despite the setbacks, I'm sure the convention will still offer some exciting experiences for attendees.

It's a shame that SDCC won't have as many big movie panels this year. I was really looking forward to seeing what Disney, Netflix, and Sony had in store. On the bright side, it could be an opportunity to focus more on the comic book side of things, which is what the convention was originally about.

Excellent. The focus of Comic Con should be on independent comics and art, not than big, dumb corporate films. In fact, if it went back to that and was less crowded, I might start going again. I feel horrible for those who have already purchased tickets to SDCC 23 though but I like going to an event with less crowd.

I'm not too bothered by the studios skipping SDCC this year. Sure, it won't be as thrilling without the major movie panels, but there's still plenty to see and explore. I'm actually looking forward to delving into the world of comic books and discovering new artists and stories.

I'm pretty bummed about the major studios skipping SDCC this year. It's always exciting to hear about upcoming releases and see exclusive footage from big-name companies. Without their presence, I can't help but feel like the convention might be a bit lackluster this time around. I understand the circumstances with the strikes, but it's still disappointing for fans who were eagerly anticipating those panels. Hopefully, next year will bring back the thrill and excitement of having the major companies back at SDCC.

The studios' decision to forgo SDCC this year owing to the strikes is understandable. The panels wouldn't have the same effect without the writers and actors. I do, however, hope that the convention can still offer participants a pleasurable experience with additional intriguing events and exhibits.
