Microsoft Studios debut Gladiator Mode for Ryse: Son of Rome
At gamescom today, Microsoft Studios together with Crytek, debuted Gladiator Mode, the cooperative multiplayer experience of Ryse: Son of Rome and an in-depth look at never-before-seen features and refinement to the game’s combat.
According to Crytek, Ryse will offer customization for players to create their own unique gladiator. These customization features include weapons, armor, shields and consumables. These items are earn through gold rewarded via victories in combat and will impact the player’s stats by improving their focus, XP, health and crowd reaction.
Like the movable floor pieces of used to recreate historic battles in the Colosseum, Ryse has a similar system called the Dynamic Tile Set. Ryse uses these “dynamic tile sets” of scenery to provide a continuous stream of unpredictable challenges. Scenery hidden underground will erupt from the floor and provide players with various different settings.
Not only will Ryse allow players to customize their character, it will also offer players the ability to customize their multiplayer experience. This is done through the challenge editor to mix and match the different maps and events into custom playlists. Each challenge will have its own leaderboard and greater rewards will be offered to the challenge which more players have played.
Crytek has also released more details regarding the combat of Ryse. Rather than the execution QTEs which were prevalent during the E3 demonstration, combat in Ryse is actually a mastery of timing of attacks and blocks. For instance, a perfectly timed block will deflect an incoming attack and also throw the enemy wide open for a counterattack. Only when an enemy is nearly defeated will the game present the player with the various executions which we saw at E3.
Like all RPGs, Ryse will also feature a Perk system. This system lets the player decide which rewards they want from hitting execution timing windows. Players can choose between increased damage, XP, health and Focus. Only when Focus is sufficiently built up, the player can then trigger a large area effect which slows enemies. However, in Gladiator Mode, perks are assigned based on whichever god the player chooses at the start of a match.
Ryse: Son of Rome will launch with 11 multiplayer maps and it is a Xbox One exclusive and will be available on launch day of the Xbox One.
