Significant interest has been paid to Warner Bros‘ Barbie since it was first announced last year. A mere screenshot appeared two months ago and generated major social media buzz. There was a time when news of a Barbie movie would NOT be greeted with unbridled enthusiasm from a crowd of adults, but everyone seemed to get what director Greta Gerwig was going for, and this was BEFORE the trailer made it all clear.
The teaser to Barbie made its debut before Avatar: The Way Of Water on Thursday night, and was uploaded to the Internet the next day. It’s the opening sequence to 2001…but with Barbie. In a barren wasteland, a gang of little girls play with baby dolls…until they suddenly notice a towering monolith made of two legs. The camera pulls back to reveal Margot Robbie in the original black-and-white striped swimsuit outfit Barbie was introduced with — yes, the ridiculous horn-rimmed glasses were part of it.
Once the girls see Barbie, they know nothing will ever be the same. They immediately smash their passe dolls into bits. One of them throws their doll into space, where it turns into the Barbie logo, and from there, we get a VERY brief slideshow of clips from the actual film, which heavily suggest an over-the-top, candy-colored musical.
In addition to Robbie as the title doll, Barbie also stars Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, Jamie Demetriou, Alexandra Shipp, Scott Evans, Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells. The film opens July 21, 2023.
