Love Hurts marks the directorial debut of stuntman Jonathan Eusebio, previously the assistant director on notable films such as 300, Black Panther, and John Wick. Now, he’s stepping into the spotlight, writing and directing his own film, Love Hurts. The lead actor is Ke Huy Quan, who finally got his big break after receiving much-deserved recognition at the Oscars and Golden Globes. This former child star, known for his roles as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies, nearly gave up on acting due to the lack of opportunities and constant rejections at auditions. He eventually shifted to working behind the scenes as a choreographer.
Hollywood’s lack of inclusivity for Asian male actors at the time contributed to his struggle. However, Ke Huy Quan was inspired to return to acting during the “Asian August” of 2018, when films like Searching and Crazy Rich Asians dominated the box office with Asian leads. He mentioned during The Goonies reunion that this moment reignited his passion for being in front of the camera.
Ke Huy Quan’s career made a triumphant comeback with Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, directed by The Daniels. That film earned him numerous acting awards, solidifying his place in Hollywood once again. When he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, Ariana DeBose, who read his name, was moved to tears. Now, the two of them star together in Love Hurts.

The fight choreography in Love Hurts is pure eye candy! With a seasoned fight choreographer like Ke Huy Quan as the star, every movement flows effortlessly, like a hot knife through butter. The action scenes remind me of the slick, intense fights from Bullet Train, Daredevil, Oldboy, and those classic Jackie Chan films from his prime. Joining Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose in the cast are Daniel Wu, football star Marshawn Lynch, America’s Next Top Model alum Lio Tipton, Mustafa Shakir, Cam Gigandet, Sean Astin, and André Eriksen.
