Looks like they were serious: the people who made Lollipop Chainsaw RePop, the remake of the 2012 fast-paced hack-and-slasher, are daring to attempt an actual sequel. They call it Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back and say they can get it out by 2027.
After an undisclosed period of time, Juliet Starling is still roller-skating around San Romero, still devoted to her family calling of zombie-slaying in gratuitously violent fashion, and still rocking her boyfriend’s living head on her hip. But it’s San Romero itself that’s changed: the whole city was bought and transformed into a movie set. Now trapped inside a twisted director’s feature, Juliet must do her thing to fight for freedom and liberate the city. Seems wacky enough, but….
What makes us wary about this is the fact that none of the original creators are involved. The first Lollipop Chainsaw was a Suda51 joint…you know Suda51; he’s the one responsible for the No More Heroes series and a bunch of other offbeat, crazy games. Suda is the kind of thing that can’t really be imitated or copied easily, and you can add to this the fact that Lollipop Chainsaw was his team-up effort with…James Gunn. Yes, the guy now in charge of the DC Cinematic Universe. Gunn is not coming back, unless he really really falls from grace. But Suda…he has not expressed any interest in directing a Lollipop Chainsaw 2, but I have to wonder, did they even ask him?
Lollipop Chainsaw 2 feels like a zombie of its own, a game that only exists because someone saw dollar signs in resurrecting the property. We can’t make that final judgment call because the thing’s not out there yet, but the gameplay video released by Dragami Games needs a lot of work. We see Juliet chainsawing packs of undead on the streets and again in the pink lair of a boss called “Zorbie” who is an obvious take on Barbie. Zorbie just sits there and occasionally throws things while generic zombie hordes generate themselves as chainsaw fodder. There’s no comparison between this limp scene and the outrageously over-the-top baddies Juliet fought the first time.
It feels cheap and lifeless, and the character and premise deserve better. Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back is set to launch on Playstation 5 sometime in 2027 (at least it could get a physical disc).
