We wondered what, exactly, Netflix was going to show for Stranger Things-related content during their press event. The show has not filmed a single frame of Season 5 yet. Shooting wasn’t scheduled to begin until this month, and then the writer’s strike kicked the can down the road for an indefinite period of time. There are scripts, but that would be spoiling things too early. So what’s left?
The Duffers managed to pull something out of their hat that’s pretty cool, yet doesn’t need to rely on existing footage. They revealed Season 5 will include Terminator‘s Linda Hamilton as an undisclosed new character. As they would say in the 1980s, THAT IS RADICAL.
“Wait a second,” some people are pointing out. “Didn’t they say they wouldn’t be adding any new characters for Season 5?” And to that we reply…HA, you BELIEVED them?? The Duffers are completely unreliable narrators when it comes to behind-the-scenes details. They also said something about a “time jump” for Season 5, but that was before the end of Season 4 was out there, which depicted a situation facing Hawkins that was rather immediately urgent.
At this moment, we don’t know what kind of character Hamilton is playing. Is she one of the good guys? Is she a government agent sent to capture Eleven? Or will she emerge from the Upside Down covered in ugly makeup? We won’t know the answers for….a LONG time. Stranger Things 5 won’t appear this year and it might not appear next year either.
