Free League ran a Kickstarter last fall for two new expansions to their Vaesen RPG: Mythic Carpathia and City of My Nightmares. I can’t recall this site actually reporting on them (our bad), but if you missed them as well, it’s not too late. Free League just opened a page on PledgeManager to allow for tardy pledges.
In Vaesen, you and your friends play paranormal investigators in the 19th century who happen to be somewhat paranormal themselves. You have the gift known as “the Sight” which means you can spot extradimensional phenomena that would be invisible to most people. Usually, this will take the form of horrible monsters you’ll be forced to do battle with. But it’s all in a day’s work. Vaesen is based on the creations of Swedish illustrator and author Johan Egerkrans, and was written by Nils Hintze who also wrote Free League’s Tales From The Loop.
Here’s what you get with each volume. Mythic Carpathia, written by a team of Polish and Ukrainian writers, changes the setting to Central and Eastern Europe, where you’ll meet the Prague branch of the Society and deal with over a dozen new creatures including Drekavac, Golem, Baba Yaga and the Vampire. The book contains three complete mysteries set in Prague, Ukraine and Transylvania. There are also plenty of illustrations by Johan Egerkrans and Anton Vitus.
City Of My Nightmares, written by Kiku Pukk Härenstam and illustrated by Johan Egerkrans and Anton Vitus. is a full-length campaign told over four parts. Your characters are invited to Stockholm to investigate a series of grisly murders, only to become embroiled in a much deeper mystery involving the very origins of the Society itself and threatening to throw the city into utter chaos. The book comes with a separate large map of Stockholm and a detailed newspaper handout.
Mythic Carpathia and City of My Nightmares are currently scheduled to be published in September 2025.
