Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution Will Receive An IMAX Premiere

Anime is in clover these days with the latest big-screen offerings from Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man topping the list, but the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen movie wants to leapfrog them both by doing something they didn’t: debut as IMAX films. What’s been dubbed Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution will premiere two days before its scheduled December 5 release, for one night only, on the BIG big screen, GKIDS announced today.

It’ll be interesting to see how Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution performs, especially with this kind of release, because…it’s a compilation film. In this case that means it’s half-rerun. Other compilation films are entire previously released seasons sewn into movies, but this one will be a weaving of the last few episodes of the Shibuya Incident arc and the first two episodes of the Culling Game arc. Those two have never been seen before, but we’ll soon find out if Jujutsu Kaisen fans will pay for something that’s not entirely original.

Jujutsu Kaisen is about Yuji Itadori, a high school student who excels in athletic activities and is otherwise normal….at first. But one day he finds himself catapulted into the world of the supernatural when he has to save his friend from a deadly curse. The only way to cure the boy is to eat a cursed object called “Sukuna’s Finger,” which just means that HE gets a curse instead. He’s now got a powerful spirit sharing his body, and though that means he gets to access the spirit’s powers, it also means he’s going to have to leave his place of education and instead hit the books at Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, which specializes in training folks under a situation like his.

The “Shibuya Incident” of Season 2 was Sukuna taking over Yuji’s body with the intent of killing a lot of people in Shibuya. Now Yoji has been essentially framed, the elders have sentenced him to death, and they’ve ordered Yuta Okkotsu (star of the feature Jujutsu Kaisen 0) to perform the deed. Worse yet, Yoji’s mentor Gojo has been sealed away in the Prison Realm. When Culling Game starts, the first task will be finding a way to undo all this!

Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution plays in IMAX December 3, and opens in regular theaters December 5. All current seasons of Jujutsu Kaisen, along with the movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0, are bingeable on Crunchyroll.
