As soon as Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse hit theaters, there were reports and rumors across social media about multiple versions of the movie existing. This was confirmed when people were able to take bootleg captures and compare them, noticing different lines or animations from the characters. The thought at the time was “how clever for a movie about the multiverse to give each viewer a slightly different experience,” but this may not have been what was intended.
For one thing, now that the movie’s been out a few months, it’s been analyzed enough to confirm there are only TWO variants of Across The Spider-Verse. One was evidently a revised version of an earlier version that was somehow sent to some theaters. This seems to be confirmed now that the digital version is purchasable — it’s the revised version.
And this is causing a problem for some people who preferred the version they got in their theater. In the early version, for example, Gwen audibly flips out when Miles appears to be crushed under rubble; you can hear her going “Oh please! No!” as she rushes over. In the digital version (and Theatrical Version B) she still runs to him, but is completely silent. Another change occurs when Miles tells Spider-Man 2099 “Nah, I’mma do my own thing.” Version A has him follow this up with “Sorry man, I’m going home!” Version B cuts that line. A full list of changes and alterations can be found in this Twitter thread.
Unfortunately, there are not two cuts of the film in the digital release, and nothing in the description for the Blu-Ray suggests Version A will be released there either. Unless there’s a public outcry loud enough for Sony to take notice, that version of Across The Spider-Verse may never be released again. Hold onto your bootleg copies!
