There’s a new horror comedy, The Zombie Wedding, coming later this month — but what makes it most unusual is who’s behind it. This is the first B-movie to bear the brand “Weekly World News.” They’re back, and they’re getting into movies now.
Weekly World News was a newspaper tabloid commonly available at grocery checkouts in the 80s and 90s. While other tabloids tried to keep a sense of keyfabe about their lies, WWN took the medium to its extreme, inventing wild tales of alien invasions, wacky paper-mache monsters and obviously fake spliced photos of celebrities. Their most famous creation was Bat Boy, a toddler with pointy ears and a big gaping fanged mouth which was always open.
It’s unlikely that anyone who holds the “Weekly World News” brand today had anything to do with the paper in its heyday, just like how the brand “Atari” has been passed around. But you can definitely say The Zombie Wedding is something the WWN editors would have approved of, wherever they are now.
Deep in New Jersey, not even the zombie apocalypse can stop the long-planned marriage of two lovers. Only problem is, the groom is a zombie already. The bride doesn’t seem to care, but her family sure does. And the guests on the groom’s side aren’t happy either, because they’re hungry for brains. The reporters of the WWN are live at the scene, trying their best to cover the chaos.
The Zombie Wedding stars Cheri Oteri (“Saturday Night Live”), Seth Gilliam (“The Walking Dead“), Heather Matarazzo (Scream, The Princess Diaries), Kevin Chamberlin (“Jessie”), Siobhan Fallon Hogan (Men in Black), Vincent Pastore (“The Sopranos”), Ajay Naidu (Office Space), Micky Dolenz of The Monkees and others. It was directed by Micah Khan from a script by Greg D’Alessandro, and Joe Corcoran served as prodicer.
The Zombie Wedding will take place September 13 on digital platforms including Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, Fandango At Home, Comcast, Dish, and DirecTV. A handful of locations will receive theatrical screenings.
