Imaginary: The Killer Teddy Bear Movie

There’s a new film coming from Blumhouse, the guys who produced M3GAN and the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie last year. Their next horror feature, Imaginary, seems to be a blend of those two concepts: a killer toy that happens to be a bear.

Said bear is owned by Alice, stepdaughter of protagonist Jessica, played by DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World Dominion). There’s something…off about the way Alice plays with that bear, the way she reacts around him…almost like the bear is speaking to her. But hey, if the title of the movie is “Imaginary,” it must be in her head, right?

Wrong. It means “Imaginary” as in imaginary friend. As in, the “friend” Jessica abandoned when she was Alice’s age and grew older. The malevolent spirit she actually befriended felt spurned by that, and it’s now returned for vengeance, taking Jessica’s daughter as revenge! But Jessica won’t let that happen without a fight, we’re sure.

In addition to DeWanda, Imaginary stars Pyper Braun as Alice, and was written and directed by Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Kick-Ass 2, the Fantasy Island movie). Let’s hope he’s better at cooking up scares with this premise than he was with Fantasy Island. The fuzzy fright flick opens March 8.

Oh, another horror flick with a haunted toy gimmick? Color me unimpressed. But hey, maybe Blumhouse will surprise us. They have a knack for turning seemingly tired concepts into gold. Still, I'll reserve judgment until I see if this bear can actually bear the weight of carrying a whole movie on its furry shoulders.

Fantasy Island didn't quite hit the mark, but I'm willing to give Jeff Wadlow another chance with Imaginary. The idea of an imaginary friend turning into a vengeful spirit taps into some fascinating mythological themes. Plus, who doesn't love a good old-fashioned showdown between good and evil? Count me in for some magical mayhem!

I'm intrigued by the premise of Imaginary, though I'm not entirely sold on the killer teddy bear angle. However, Blumhouse has a knack for taking unconventional concepts and turning them into compelling horror experiences. Plus, with DeWanda Wise in the lead role, I'm hopeful that there will be some depth to the characters beyond the typical horror movie stereotypes.
