Disney and Lucasfilm just revealed the title of the fifth and final (?) Indiana Jones film, and it’s an odd one. We have no idea what “The Dial Of Destiny” means other than the possible Maguffin of the picture. My first thought when seeing it was that Indy must be desperate to find soap.
With the release of the title came the release of the first trailer. It answers a few questions people have had about Indy 5. No one knew if John Rhys-Davies would be in the film until now, when he shows up in the first 20 seconds of footage. It is the late 60s and Indy is still a college professor, but he hung up his iconic hat a while ago. Sallah tells him he’ll have to take it off the rack because there’s one more adventure ahead. Go figure…just when he thought he was out, they pull him back in.
The trailer also answers who Phoebe Waller-Bridge is playing: Helena, Indy’s god-daughter. She must be the substitution for Mutt, who was not very popular.
Whether this turns out to be the final Indiana Jones Lucasfilm will make, no one can say (knowing Disney, they’ll find a way to make a sixth) but it will be the end in several ways. Not only is it the last time Harrison Ford, now 80 years old, will be playing this character but it will be the last movie legendary composer John Williams ever works on. Sad but true. This will also be the first Indy where neither Lucas nor Spielberg have any real input (Spielberg serves as a producer though).
The trailer closes with a great gag relating to the famous “sword fighter” scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. This time, Indy finds the tables turned on him. Indiana Jones and the…uh…Dial of Destiny will be released June 30, 2023.
