Han Solo’s Movie Will Be An Origin Story
With less than six months to go before the planned release of Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, there still isn’t much about the film the public knows. Ordinarily a teaser trailer would have been released last summer, followed by the first full trailer making its debut before The Last Jedi….but nothing appeared. The general public is still walking around unaware this movie is (allegedly) in post-production. You only know about it because you read sites like this.
So when Disney finally released some kind of plot description this afternoon, it felt like a major revelation….until we read it.
Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.
Our reaction to this was similar to the reaction when Disney unveiled the title of the movie as just “Solo.” It’s…an origin story, and these days, it’s hard to get excited for such things. Do we really need to know how Han met Chewbacca, or how his relationship with frenemy Lando got started? Does anybody really care?
Like most filmgoers we just want a crazy adventure starring the galaxy’s most notorious scoundrel. Rumor has it we haven’t seen much of this film because Disney isn’t pleased with it and is trying to bury it. If this is true, why stick to the May release date? That leads to another rumor that the film could be delayed. I say: delay it.
The Star Wars brand is one of the most valuable the company owns. As costly as it would be to scrap and reshoot this entire film, diluting audience interest in Star Wars as a whole would be far more damaging. Disney can’t let a total stinker be released on their watch. If “Solo” is that stinker, don’t just toss it out there and hope no one will notice. Make it good.
