Halloween Greetings From Ship Of Heroes

We’ve received a new progress update from the team working on Ship Of Heroes, the superhero-based MMO scheduled to reach completion in 2021….and they brought along a Halloween-themed special video.

Ship of Heroes conducted three of their largest server stress tests to date last September. Called Invasion Tests, they were the first truly open beta tests in development history. Mass amounts of heroes were summoned in the same area, and then the game was dumped with tons of enemies to see how many the server could handle. Though they were pleased with how well their coding held up, more tests need to be conducted before release.

Here are the recently published notes:

  • Creating and debugging mission content is one of the main focus areas of the SoH dev
team right now. They openly say they are preparing for a launch, though no firm date
has been set at this point. But apparently, this mission was created during the month of
October, which augurs well for the amount of mission content we might see at launch.
  • The mission required about 30 minutes of gameplay to complete, so the devs sped it up
to keep the video short. This actually speaks to an important issue – are the devs
creating longer missions and arcs like we saw in the later stages of City of Heroes, or are
we going to get a lot of little missions requiring about 5-10 minutes to complete? Given
this holiday example, longer missions are likely.
  • While holiday content is usually not centric to an MMO’s plot, there is a storyline for this
mission and a mission-giver who will be involved in major events. The devs tell us that
she is named Iris the Great and that she is the current head of the Mage’s Guild aboard
the Justice. Yep, the Mage’s Guild, because magic is more powerful in space than on
    planets. Who knew?
  • It’s very positive for the progression of this new MMO that the devs are showing
mission content, especially long missions that are connected to a consistent story. The
quality of the story in MMOs can vary quite a lot, and attempting a new setting,
backstory, and mission path is a big deal. It’s one of the reasons we play games.

As much as the team would like to lay down a definitive date of release at this point, they can’t promise Ship of Heroes will reach a completed state anytime soon. It’s very likely to happen sometime within the next 365 days…in the meantime, expect another public Invasion Test soon, followed by closed beta testing of mission arcs.
