Go Watch ‘Alice’ | Korean Drama Series on Viki

-

Go watch ‘Alice” is a pun.  There are two (2) Korean drama series with the name ‘Alice’ in the title: “Alice’ (2020) and ‘Alice, the Final Weapon’ (2022). Do not be confused by the titles and assume that the latter one is a sequel. The two series are NOT the same. The storylines are completely different and the only thing they have in common is that they are both streaming on Viki.

‘Alice’ (2020); 16 episodes: Sci-Fi, Time Travel

Just Because You Can Does Not Mean You Should

The purpose of this series is to find the answer to the question: Even if time travel is possible, should it be permissible? The physicist who finally figured out how to accomplish time travel thought it was good. She thought that you can go back to your past and experience wonderful memories again. What a pity that others found more sinister and pernicious ways to take advantage of time traveling.

In this series “Alice” is the name of an organization. There are “legal” time travelers who work at Alice and there are “illegal” time travelers who do anything for money. Not sure if they work for an organization or for themselves. But for a price, the “illegal” time travelers will go back into the past, kill someone, and then travel back to the future. The police in the past can find no evidence or traces of them anywhere. It’s like they disappeared. Convenient, huh?

There’s a Book That Tells How to END Time Travel

Illegal time travelers have an evil agenda. But sometimes the “legal time travelers” from Alice also screw up! Of course, their rules say their client is not supposed to injure, harm or murder anyone when they go back. But some people don’t have pleasant memories from the past. They go back intending to murder the person that caused them pain. Some even go back and murder themselves! (O.o)

The year is 2050 and Alice sends time travelers back to the past to retrieve a book that has instructions on how to END time travel. Both the time travelers from Alice and the illegal time travelers are trying to get their hands on that book. Somebody in Alice called the “Teacher” wants the book. But why? Do they want to end time travel; or destroy the book and continue time travel?

Time Travel is Complicated

Time travel is complicated because it is mixed with the multiverse theory. (“The Multiverse Theory Explained (With Examples) and Whether it’s Possible” – History-Computer) Based on the science we know, there is a universe, one universe (“uni” meaning one). But the multiverse theory posits that there are several universes where you or your doppelganger lives. You might travel back in time but end up in another dimension, i.e. another universe, where the past you remember never happened. In your universe, your mother was shot by someone and you’re trying to catch the killer before her murder occurs. But when you time travel, you end up in a different dimension where your mother is stabbed to death and the killer is you!

The storyline for this series had all kinds of scenarios for what could happen if a person traveled back in time. The scriptwriters even included what might happen if they ended up in the wrong dimension experiencing a memory that is NOT their memory.

Viewership and Rating

There were some parts in this series that were confusing and other parts where it simply fell short of my expectations. But overall, the scriptwriters were very creative and came up so many different time travel scenarios.

Viki viewers rated it 9 out 10 stars. I agree.

‘Alice, the Final Weapon’ (2022); 8 episodes: Thriller, Action

Alice Gets a New Dad

In this series “Alice” is the name of a young woman. Sadly, she was kidnapped as a young girl and trained to be an assassin. She survived her training but never killed anyone. WHY? Becaue she escaped. There was a man who was searching for his own daughter, but Alice told him that his daughter was dead. So he adopted her as his daughter, even giving her the name of his deceased daughter, and does his best to help her live like a “normal” high school kid. But you know what? High school is hard!

Alice Gets a New Friend

There is a boy at high school and everybody thinks he’s a nutjob. They don’t know that he witnessed the violent deaths of his parents. Because of the trauma and pain of that experience, he believes he has no reason to live. His adoptive father does his best to raise him well and hopes one day he will find out that living is worthwhile.

When kids at school are being bullied, he steps in to take their place and lets the bullies beat him up instead. WHY? He doesn’t mind if he feels pain because for him, pain eliminates pain. The physical pain of being beaten up by bullies eliminates the mental pain he feels from having watched his parents die.

Alice does not know that he volunteers to tke a beating. One night she sees him being dragged into an alley to be beaten up. She steps in and uses her killer training skills to beat up the bad guys and rescue him. When he sees the face of his beautiful savior, he decides that she has given him a reason to live. Even though Alice was told not to make friends, she makes a new friend. They develop a friendship which leads to a romantic relationship.

Why Alice is the Final Weapon

When Alice escaped she took “a list” with her. It is the list of all the children who have been trained as assassins, around the world. Some dangerous people are after her who want to retrieve the list and kill her for daring to escape.

But Alice did not escape without a twofold plan.

Alice intended to be “the final weapon” that destroyed this insidious organization. However, she made that plan BEFORE she made a friend.

Now that she has someone she loves, who is in danger of being killed because of her, is the plan for being the final weapon really what’s important?

Alice, the Final Weapon” made my watch list because Song Geon-Hee was the male lead. He has had supporting roles in:

His performances in those Korean drama series were very enjoyable, so I was happy to see him cast as a male lead in a K-drama. However,

Viki viewers rated it 8.7 out of 10 stars. I agree.
