Gender Neutral acting award category, How feasible is that?
A Gender Neutral for acting awards is the something Non-Binary actor Emma Corrin want to impose for acting award bodies like Bafta and Oscars. Corrin identifies as non-binary and prefers the pronouns They/Them over He/She/Him/Her. So, out of respect for their preference, I will provide them with what pronouns they desire. Non-binary individuals do not identify as men or women. Therefore, they feel assaulted if the incorrect pronouns are used. Due to availability, Emma Currin frequently plays female roles despite their gender identity. Rarely do you see Non-binary characters in film and television. Consequently, I sympathize with their situation, but I disagree with the merger of the best actor and best actress categories.
Is a Gender Neutral Acting Award going to work?
It sounds good on paper, but it will decrease the visibility of women. Let’s only consider the Academy Awards. The Academy Awards had existed for 94 years. I’d like to discuss one of its genderless categories, namely Best Director. In the 94 years of Oscar history, only three women have won. These female directors are Kathryn Bigelow, Chloe Zhao, and Jane Campion. All the Men who won the award for best director cannot fit in this article.
This does not imply that male directors are superior. There are numerous talented female directors who are not nominated. Best Picture is another category that is gender-neutral. The majority of film protagonists are straight white men. Thus, the majority of best picture winners have male protagonists. If gender categories are eliminated from awards, fewer women will win.
The majority of Academy voters and decision-makers are men, so their subconscious bias is more likely to favor what they can relate to. As long as men control the film industry, a gender-neutral acting award will not benefit women, and a woman of color will fare even worse. If they want non-gender conforming individuals to be included, give them their own categories. It will increase their visibility.
As long as majority of the Academy and higher people who have powers in the movie industry are men, A Gender Neutral category will be bad for women.
