We summarized Free League‘s 2022 release list earlier this year, but mentioned there were probably a few unannounced surprises waiting. Here’s one of ’em: newly announced this week, it’s a brand-new tabletop game, not based on any previous game or property: DEATH IN SPACE.
Designed by the team at Stockholm Kartell, Death In Space is a sci-fi adventure that takes place in a universe without an Earth — because it was destroyed. Only you and the crew of your ship survived (as far as you know), and your goal is to find a home somewhere else. But where? Space is big, they say.
The bad news is, with the collapse of Earth went the frontier system that supported all the colonies across the galaxy. However, this DOES mean that stuff is free for the taking. Gather materials to improve your ship and aid your chances of survival.
Here’s the wild part: if you can’t think of a character, the game will make one for you. An automatic character generator for the game called DEATH-BBS can be used to assign you a random role with the push of a button. No excuses now!
● Light-weight rules, intended to be easy to use and quick to learn
● A system for quickly generating player characters & their spacecraft or space-station
● 60+ different modules to make the spacecraft or space-station your own
● An introduction to the Tenebris system, its main locations and history
● A system for repairs, where you collect spare parts to repair your stuff
● 20 cosmic mutations, representing physical manifestations of the void
● A system for spacecraft confrontations and boarding
● An introductory scenario to jumpstart your campaign
● 40+ tables and generators packed with setting flavor
There will also be an official soundtrack for Death In Space: 90 minutes of atmospheric music you can put on a loop to set the mood. The set will be available from all music streaming services on launch.
Death In Space can be preordered now from the Free League webshop. Anyone who puts money down will receive an advance PDF of the core rulebook.

The plot of this game made me lose confidence of the Real life Space Station Jeff Bezos is trying to build.
Free League, you’ve done it again, making my wishes come true. I adore how Free League is putting out all of these excellent indie games and bringing these incredible authors to a wider audience!
