A new TV commercial for Dark Phoenix (which we’ll get to in a bit) reveals a couple of new scenes from Fox’s upcoming X-Movie…which is sounding more and more like its last, if you don’t count the spinoff New Mutants (still rumored to be premiering this year, though no one knows when).
Fox executive Emma Watts introduced Dark Phoenix to the crowd at CinemaCon and used some revealing language when referring to their big-budget movie. According to several witnesses she called it “The perfect sendoff for our epic X-Men series,” which all but confirms Disney has no plans to continue this universe beyond what has already been completed or nearly completed.
The surviving exception could be Deadpool, as he’s right there on The Walt Disney Company’s front page now. Deadpool would be easy to import into the modern MCU since breaking the fourth wall is essentially one of his superpowers. But nothing’s been confirmed for the Merc.
In addition, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has publicly stated his studio has no immediate plans to use the X-Men in anything. To re-post the quote from today’s previous report: “It’ll be a while. It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set. So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.”
So how will the X-Men movie universe as we know it bow out? Here are thirty seconds of clues and “Beyowrrrrrrrrp” bass noises. We’ll find out more June 7.
