You've got to check out "Rectify." It's such a slow burn, but the character development is phenomenal. It digs deep into the aftermath of wrongful imprisonment and really gets into how trauma shapes people. Plus, the writing is top-notch, so many quiet moments that hit hard.
Another one that doesn't get enough credit is "The Leftovers." It starts with this huge, unexplained event, but then it just gets into the characters' struggles and grief. The way it handles existential themes is just incredible.
