“Uncle Samsik” is a Korean drama series released in 2024, with 10 episodes, and categorized as Historical Fiction and Political Drama; streaming on Disney+/Hulu; it is English dubbed and subbed. ♦ Doesn’t Everybody Want to Eat 3 Meals a Day? “Uncle Samsik”, is an affectionate nickname. The nickname “Samsik” was given because “Sam” means “3” and “sik” means “food”. Whether you think of Uncle Samsik as a good guy or a bad guy, you can not deny that he had a noble goal. He wanted every Korean to eat 3 meals a day. On the other hand, the Kdrama series “Uncle Samsik” paints a dark and grave picture of Korea in the 1960s. It was a troubling time of political transition in the Republic of Korea. Uncle Samsik knows about pizza. South Korea's economic rise is a real-life miracle, and "Uncle Samsik" seems to explore the challenges they faced in the 1960s. Using pizza as a metaphor for prosperity is interesting. Never thought I'd hear those two words in the same sentence! The cast is amazing - Song Kang-ho is a legend. Definitely adding this to my watchlist. Hopefully, it sheds light on a period of Korean history I don't know much about.

Wow, this drama sounds like it has a lot going for it! Not only is the historical setting intriguing, but the themes of poverty, hunger, and political struggle are relevant even today. The comparison between South Korea in the 60s and North Korea now is interesting. Are the writers suggesting that economic prosperity is key to reunification? I like that "Uncle Samsik" isn't just entertainment, it makes you think about important issues.

South Korea's struggle for prosperity after gaining independence is a story that needs to be told. "Uncle Samsik" sounds like it does that with a combination of historical accuracy and fictional drama. The fact that it makes you consider the situation in North Korea today is a plus. Even if the plot is a bit predictable, the performances and social commentary might make it worthwhile.
