I played a fair bit of Sonic Unleashed for the Wii today which was my first time really playing a Sonic game since Sonic Heroes. I had given up caring when Shadow the Hedgehog came out. And I must say it really isn't that bad, but it is still a horrible Sonic game though. The Day stages feel alright, controls could use some tightening up, and even all the extras like sliding, drifting and the such feel fine after you get use to it. Now the Night stages I actually enjoy but they don't belong in a Sonic game. It is the same issue they had with Sonic Adventure 2, the shifting game styles just wreck the pace and the feel. But when you play them both by themselves outside of the "story" mode they are both quite enjoyable. Also I hate the story and I want to punch whoever thought up Chip.
Now I think the biggest problem with game is the whole Werehog angle, which is a new level of poor choices for the series. They could have gotten away with it if they just made it another character, I mean Chaos would have been a perfect fit. Honestly though I think there is promise with what they have there though, it just needs to move away from Sonic. If they wanted to play it safe retooling it into a new Ristar game would be inspired. I doubt that Sonic Team would try to start a new action/adventure series after Billy Hatcher, but maybe they could finally realize the rabbit concept.
