The next trend-setting Sentai.

Mecha-wise, it seems like Go-onger set the trend of almost every machine being combinable into a single super robot. Shinkenger followed it, and I don't see Goseiger stopping, considering all the connectors in the mechas.

Were there any talking mecha before Abaranger?

As mentioned, ZyuRanger's DaiZyuJin could talk, as could two of the three God Generals from KakuRanger.

Hell, the latter has a story arc where their mecha have to fight on their own to try and rescue the KakuRangers when they've mostly been captured by DaiMahOh.

No, Hurricanger did it with the TenkuGoraiSenpuJin. You might also be able to argue that TurboRanger did it too with their mecha being able to combine with their home base to make the Super Turbo Builder, though I'm not sure if it's really the same thing.

I should have added the number of machines too.

I'm not saying Go-onger was the first to combine every vehicle into a single mecha (or, at least, I shouldn't have said that:sweat:), that isn't new (especially if you consider older series which had less mechas and didn't have random machines left out), but it pretty much seems to have established a trend of uniting a high number of mechas that can combine among themselves for other formations to create the ultimate robot, considering the two series that followed it seemingly used the same format. Comparatively, Gourai Senpuujin only had 6 components.

Even by those standards, TenkuGoraiSenpujin qualifies though. You have the mecha that can combine on their own to form the Senpujin, the mecha that can combine on their own to form the Goraijin, and Tenkujin, which can combine with both individually the previous mecha on their own as well as their ultimate form.

And that's even before throwing in Revolver Mammoth, which combined with all the mecha and all their little animal mecha weapon things to boot.

Yes, but they were ALL full-sized mecha. Hurricanger was the first Sentai to have three different mecha that were all standard robo size combine. You never saw that before--the OhBlockers didn't join with the standard Ohranger mecha. That was the test run. And if you look at it its really a clusterfck of a mecha, isn't it? It just doesn't look as bad as later series though, but its definitely the forerunner for all that.

And, since if I remember Jill's sight right, the ultimate Daizyujin mecha:
[HIDE]is supposed to be God[/HIDE], I imagine it DOES talk.

But Abaranger's got the first individual talking mecha. Interestingly enough, talking mecha has never been done with vehicles before. No Go-Onger doesn't count--they were half animal.

And no, they aren't going away with Goseiger--already GoseiGreat (LOVE that name though) has a giant ostrich docked on its back and boxer gloves.

This is why I don't think Goseiger's going to bring the change we want.

Yes, but they were ALL full-sized mecha. Hurricanger was the first Sentai to have three different mecha that were all standard robo size combine.

You're ignoring 2 differences:

1-Even if Hurricanger was the first, it didn't set the standard. The following series dropped that format, so it didn't set any "trend". The series right after Go-onger kept its format and now we might be going there yet again.

2-You're reducing the number of robots. Even Jetman had 2 full sized robots combining. Hurricanger had 3, but Go-onger had 4 full sized robots combining with a 5th full sized one as their weapon. Shinkenger has 4 full sized mechas + a few smallers ones combining into a single one. Goseiger's mecha have a bunch of attachment points, which hint that they're following the same formula yet again.
