Most interesting series of the summer. I'm a sucker for fantasy, but most fantasy anime tend to suck. Boring characters, or worse, the scale is too small. (To me, your world should be bigger than your characters.)
Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu, or, Legend of the Legendary Heroes, does not seem to have that problem so far. The anime is based on a long-running light novel series by Takaya Kagami, and as I understand it, it's broken up into two parts:
Legend of the Legendary Heroes, an 11 volume series that develops the world and gives backstory and development to the central characters for the second series, The Legend of the Great Heroes of Legend.
So far, we're just getting the first half, but it doesn't seem like a prologue to me at all. It centers around three characters: Sion Astal, the king of the focus country, Roland, known as the Hero King, who's trying to bring peace to all the land, Ryner Lute (the main character), a lazy magician with the power of the Alpha Stigma, a powerful eye technique that allows him to instantly analyze and replicate any magic ability, and Ferris Eris, a swordswoman assigned to be Ryner Lute's bodyguard.
The series' focus is on Ryner and Ferris collecting legendary magical objects for the purpose of bringing peace to the land. Of course, it grows to become more than that. (Avoid the Wikipedia article. Seriously.)
