The Grand Legacy Of Lego Batman Explored In New Video Game

By this point, Batman as a Lego figure is a common sight. There’s just something about taking such a dark, dramatic character and reshaping him as a Minifig that works, paradoxically. Lego Batman has had his own movie and several video games, but the newly announced Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight promises to be a bit different. The game will get into Batman’s origin and show how Lego Bruce Wayne decided to dress as a bat to fight crime. It takes inspiration from just about everything, recreating famous scenes from every Batman movie: from the trailer below we see Batman chasing the Penguin (from The Batman), Bane antagonizing Bats with speeches about darkness (from Dark Knight Rises), and Joker asking him “Why so serious?” (from The Dark Knight). When the game isn’t doing homages, it’ll present a fully open-world Lego Gotham for Batman to patrol in his stylish car. “Whether he’s the wrathful Dark Knight, the brilliant detective, or the unlikely father of the ‘Batfam,’ Batman has constantly evolved — shaped by the world around him while remaining a timeless symbol,” said Jim Lee, President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer at DC. “This game brings together nearly every […]

I like how this game is bringing together almost every version of Batman. I grew up watching different Batman movies, and each one had a different style. Putting all of them in one game feels like a proper tribute. I also think an open-world Lego Gotham could keep me playing for a long time. Driving around, switching between characters, and finding hidden things is what I enjoy most in Lego games. What makes this special for me is that it does not only focus on jokes or slapstick comedy, but also tries to show Batman’s origin and personality. That makes the mix of serious and funny more balanced.

This feels like a celebration more than just a game. The fact that it covers Batman’s different eras, his detective side, his darker side, and his family side makes it much bigger than the previous Lego Batman titles. An open-world Gotham will give us space to experience all those versions naturally, instead of being limited to one storyline.

I am wondering how deep the detective gameplay will be. Lego games usually focus on action and humor, but Batman as a character is also about solving puzzles. If TT Games can include more serious detective mechanics, it will add a fresh layer to the usual Lego style.

Personally, I really like the idea of an open-world Lego Gotham. Previous Lego games often had hub areas, but they were still limited. If this new one gives us a real Gotham City to explore with the Batmobile and other vehicles, that will make the game feel bigger and more alive. I am also curious how they will handle Batman’s detective side, because Lego games usually focus more on combat and puzzles. If TT Games can combine humor with some serious storytelling moments, then it will not just be fun for kids but also for older fans who have followed Batman for years.

I have to be honest, I do not feel excited about this new Lego Batman project. I understand that Lego games have their place, and many people enjoy the light tone and humor, but I would have preferred news about a new Arkham game instead. The Arkham series gave us something very deep, emotional, and challenging. It showed Batman as the world’s greatest detective while also letting us experience intense combat and serious storytelling. That is the version of Batman I want to continue.

When I hear that this new Lego title is revisiting Batman’s origin and mixing different movie moments, I feel like it is not needed. We already have the Lego Batman Movie and several Lego Batman games from the past. Repeating this idea again feels safe and predictable. Meanwhile, the Arkham series ended years ago, and many fans, including me, are still hoping for a continuation or at least something that carries the same tone and gameplay style.
