I've been thinking a lot about how game difficulty has changed over the years. Back in the day, we had punishing classics like Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden that required a mastery of mechanics, and if you couldn't cut it, well, you just had to keep retrying. Fast forward to today, and there are so many options for adjusting difficulty settings, or even games designed with accessibility in mind that really take a softer approach.
On one hand, I totally appreciate the effort to make games more accessible for everyone, especially those who might struggle with traditional mechanics. However, I wonder if this trend leads to a lot of gamers missing out on the satisfaction that comes from overcoming a true challenge. Are we getting too soft, or is this just progress towards a more inclusive gaming environment?
I'd love to hear what others think! What do you prefer in your games, a tough challenge or something a bit more forgiving? Have you noticed a personal shift in how you handle game difficulty over the years? Let's discuss!
