The Evolution of Character Classes: Which Ones Deserve a Comeback?

Character classes have been a staple of tabletop RPGs since the beginning, but as many of us have seen, some classes have remained more popular than others over the years. I recently stumbled upon an old Dragon Magazine from the '80s that had some fantastical classes that I had completely forgotten about, like the Mystic and the Samurai! It got me thinking about which classic character classes deserve a comeback in modern systems.

Are there any underappreciated classes from editions past that you believe could thrive with today’s gameplay mechanics? Perhaps the Bard released from its stereotype of being just a “jester” or the original Paladin with more nuanced moral dilemmas? Or maybe you think newer systems have gotten it right and traditional classes need to phase out?

Let’s get into the character class evolution! What’s your favorite nostalgic pick, and do you believe it could be revamped for a contemporary campaign? Looking forward to your thoughts!

The Mystic class deserves a glorious comeback! With its blend of spellcasting and unique abilities, it had a distinctive flavor that could easily be reimagined with today's mechanics. Imagine a Mystic with a focus on mental warfare and illusions, reshaping the battlefield, now that’s a concept worthy of a Klingon’s respect!

As for Bards, I absolutely agree they should break free from the “jester” mold. They can be formidable storytellers and strategists, not just comic relief. Perhaps they could tap into the powers of their audience or use music to enhance allies' abilities in combat, making them a central figure in any adventure.

What do you think about integrating moral dilemmas into classes like the Paladin? That could elevate role-playing beyond mere alignment checks. Would love to hear your thoughts on how these could mesh with current gameplay! Qapla’!
