From Capcom
In Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, all mission progress is saved directly to the Nintendo 3DS cartridge, where it cannot be reset. The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability, encouraging fans to improve mission scores. The game’s save mechanics cannot remove any content available for users. Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, and we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer.

I had also heard that because of this gamestop won't be taking any copies in for store credit.

Gamestop said they will be taking used copies, but they weren't going to originally.

I really don't like the idea of locking save files like that. That would be horrible if any RPG had that type of 'feature'.

I agree with the article I linked. It sets a bad precedent. And all this will do is make the hackers rip open the game and fix this issue.

Except that article is totally misleading.

The only thing Mercenaries "saves" in the first place is player scores. There is no story mode, no cut scenes, and no secret files. It is a game purely played for how high a score you can get.

It's like saying an old arcade game is bad because it has a top ten high scores list.

This article only proves that bad journalism, propagated by irresponsible fear-mongering, can cause serious damage even in this day and age.

"Mission progress" in this case means "high score".

Not to be a dick here but do you even know what kind of game Mercenaries even is?

Yup I sure do. You do know there is a single player aspect to it right? Either way have only ONE save file is stupid. But hey, what ever makes you happy.

And that single player aspect is ALSO a scoring mode.

It is a game purely about getting high scores.

I mean, people could make the argument that having someone else's high score on it would motivate them to play more. Like how there's that ONE GUY who's initials are always above yours in the old arcade days. (Curse you SEX! One day you will be ranked number two!)

Though, to be honest, what bothers me about the matter is not anything to do with the game. I'm not interested in it, and I don't even own a 3DS so I couldn't play it even if I was.

What DOES bother me, speaking as someone who has done this kind of work before, is that the truth of the matter could have been addressed if the writers of the original articles had taken two seconds to fact check.

They didn't because "CAPCOM R EVILZ" was a sexier headline and it's sounding like that irresponsibility is going to financially hurt Capcom in a way they do not deserve.

If they did an un-erasable single save file thing to a real RE game? People getting mad over it and blogs calling them out on it would be completely justified. That is not the case here.

It's not only saving mission progress, it's also saving weapon/mods/item hauls aswell, don't know if you can upgrade weapons but i'd guess that would be locked down in the save file aswell.

I agree it doesn't matter that much due to the type of game Mercenaries is but if this type of feature finds itself into AAA games it's not gonna be pretty.
